Thursday fire contained to single unit at Roban Apartments

With the Greencastle Fire Department tower truck making for a dramatic scene in front of Roban Apartments Thursday night, the fire is actually being fought in the rear of the building, where a fire was contained to a single second-story apartment on the north end of the buidling.

With black smoke rolling from a second-story room at Roban Apartments Thursday night, local firefighters were preparing for the worst.

Fortunately, the box alarm got plenty of personnel on the scene quickly and the fire was contained to a single apartment.

Firefighters were dispatched to the apartment complex located at 327 Bloomington St. at 9:34 p.m., bringing two Greencastle Fire Department engines, the tower truck and a service vehicle.

According to GFD Fire Chief John Burgess, 14 firefighters were on the scene to contain the flames.

GFD arrived at the apartments at about 9:38 p.m. Their quick response yielded quick results, as the fire was out at approximately 9:45 p.m.

The fire affected just one apartment, a second-story unit that is situated above the maintenance garage on the north end of the building.

Firefighters were on the scene until 11:25 p.m. dealing with the aftermath of the smoke damage and checking for additional signs of fire before returning to station.

The tower truck was utilized to scan the roof for further damage.

Multiple officers from the Greencastle Police Department and DePauw Public Safety were also on the scene, as was a Putnam County Operation Life ambulance.

Additionally, the Cloverdale Fire Department was dispatched to cover the Greencastle station while GFD handled the fire.

The fire and its cause are still under investigation at this time, however Burgess related to the paper that damages amount from $50,000 to $70,000.
