PREP ROUNDUP: Cub wrestlers, swimmers pick up wins

Saturday, December 8, 2018

Greencastle’s wrestling team had its first home match of the season Wednesday night against North Vermillion, winning 57-18.

Cauy Thomas, Trace Thomas, Austin Stockall, Jacob Fox and Jacob Baker all had wins by pin, while Schuyler Stone had a “great match,” coach Shane Thomas said, and won by decision.

Lyndon Briones, Mark Roberts and Jake Overstreet won varsity matches by forfeit, but all won exhibition matches by pin.

“Thanks to all who came out to support the team on Wednesday night,” coach Thomas said. “We hope to see you again at GHS for our Holiday Tournament on Dec. 15t.”

The Tiger Cubs will travel to Zionsville on Saturday for an all-day tournament.

In other wrestling:

Decatur Central 49, Cloverdale 28 — On Thursday, the Clovers hosted sectional rival Decatur Central.

While the Hawks won the meet, Clover coach Chris Kaufman was pleased with how his team competed.

“The Clovers wrestled their hearts out,” Kaufman said. “Decatur Central came to Cloverdale to make a statement. When we have our seeding meeting for the sectional and compare records, Decatur was not happy in the past with our wrestlers being seeded over theirs. They requested the dual meet with us to ensure a better seeding of their wrestlers.”

Kaufman noted that Decatur Central has over 1,800 students in its high school, while Cloverdale has less than 1,500 students in its entire school corporation.

“Decatur blasted Instagram all week about their intention to come to Cloverdale and win big,” Kaufman said. “They expected to win 84-0, which is a perfect score in a dual meet. They even broadcast the meet live on Instagram to show their dominance.

“However, our wrestlers were determined to stand our ground,” he added. “While we did not win the dual meet, our wrestlers outperformed expectations.”

Kaufman noted that Ford Mayhew lost by a pin in the third period at 170 pounds, while at 182 pounds Hunter Fox was pinned by his opponent.

At 192, Sean Gaston began to turn the tide for the Clovers with a victory by pin, Kaufman said.

Back to the light weight, Xavier Evans won his match by a major decision and Will Roberts won by a pin at 113.

Matthew Halloran lost by points in a hard-fought match at 120, Kaufman noted, while Isaiah Ramsay, Eric Stattner and Jevin Moore all lost by pins at 124, 132 and 138, respectively.

Caydhan Stevens won the 145-pound match by a pin for the Clovers, while Caden Opiela lost at 152 by points.

Brady Szczerbik finished up the varsity matches with a statement pin at 160, Kaufman said.

In four junior varsity matches, Seth Geiger lost a pair of matches in his first wrestling experience ever, while Micheal Silcox won a match by pin at 120 and Jessica Geiger won a match by pin at 152.

“While we did not win, I was very proud of our wrestlers and most of them that I hoped would compete in their matches came out with a victory, Kaufman said.

Swimming

Tiger Sharks sweep Southmont — Greencastle coach Kent Menzel noted that Thursday was a very fast night at McAnally pool, with Greencastle sweeping the visiting Mounties.

“Our Tiger Shark swimmers really came out to compete against the Mounties, and were able to record lifetime best swims from start to finish in the meet,” he said. “The successful outcome on both the boys and girls sides were driven by very strong performances from seniors Ben Parsons, Donovan Asbell, Sydney Lewis and Abby Meyer.

“Those four swam strong individually, but even more importantly they drove our relays to create a foundation for the team wins,” Menzel said.
