Gregory Dean Vanes

Gregory Dean Vanes, 62, of Indianapolis and formerly of Brazil, passed away at Terre Haute Regional Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, following a brief illness.

Greg was born in Clay County on Nov. 20, 1956 the son of Bill U. and Shirley J. (Morlan) Vanes.

He graduated from Brazil High School with the Class of 1975.

Following high school he worked at Vanes Boiler Works in Brazil for several years. He worked at various companies as a pipe fitter and welder in the construction industry for the duration of his life.

Greg loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed the northwest area of Clay County, where he panned gold, hunted, fished, camped and built guns.

Greg was a worker. He was devoted to making sure his family was well cared for and enjoyed spending time with them.

Greg is preceded in death by his father Bill Vanes, his brother William “Bill” Vanes and ex-wife and dear friend Kathy Vanes.

Greg is survived by his mother Shirley Vanes of Brazil; son Gregory Vanes of Indianapolis; daughter Dominique Gibson and husband Josh of Greencastle; two step-children, Shaun Jugg and wife Star of Paragon and Amy Kinder and husband Kris of Wyoming; grandchildren Zackery Calandrilla, Tiffany Vanes, Levi Gibson, Addison Gibson, Rosie Kinder, Piper Kinder, Mariah Jugg and Travis Jugg; brother John Vanes (Lisa) of Brazil; nephew Johnny Vanes; and great-nephew Nathan.

Visitation will be held at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., Brazil, from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. Services will follow at 7 p.m. with Gene Walls officiating.
