With national issues dominating the internet and social media, there is an ongoing debate about the accuracy of the phrase, "all politics is local." What is still local however are our elections.

In Indiana it is the responsibility of the clerk of the Circuit Court (also known as the county clerk) to administer all federal, state, county, municipal and special elections in each county. Among other duties, it is the clerk's responsibility to verify the accuracy and integrity of voting machines, certify official vote totals and maintain official records of registered voters.

The clerk also has a wide range of other duties, which include administering the official court records of all court cases with jurisdiction in the county, preparing the court's permanent historical records, processing and issuing documents for court cases, and collecting and distributing funds related to court cases.

Putnam County Clerk Heather Gilbert will be the featured speaker for the first Community Conversation of 2019 on Monday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kiwanis Room at the Putnam County Public Library, 103 E. Poplar St., Greencastle.

Gilbert is just starting her second term as clerk. During her first term in office Gilbert successfully oversaw the move to the use of voting centers in Putnam County. The Community Conversation Series is sponsored by the Greencastle League of Women Voters, the Putnam County Public Library and the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce. Goal of the continuing program is to provide the community an opportunity to hear from and speak to their elected and appointed government officials.
