A two-vehicle accident occurred on U.S. 231 south of Greencastle near the old Omar Bakery building (now Visiting Angels) late Wednesday morning.

At 11:20 a.m. Starr L. Chapman, 51, Hymera, was exiting the parking lot at Visiting Angels, 3197 S. U.S. 231, in a 2003 Chevrolet Venture. Chapman told Deputy Markus Witt she was preparing to turn southbound but her vehicle started to slide onto U.S. 231 in the slick conditions.

As the van slid across the road, the driver’s side rear area was struck by a northbound 2009 Mercury Milan driven by Karli J. Cox, 17, Coatesville.

The impact spun Chapman’s vehicle around to come to rest in the southbound lane of 231, facing north.

Cox was unable to give a statement to deputies, as she was being treated and transported from the scene by Putnam County Operation Life. Deputies believed her injuries to be minor.

Cox’s vehicle continued north after impact, crossing the southbound lane and coming to rest in the ditch on the west side of the road, about 100 feet north of the contact point.

Chapman declined medical treatment.

Gasoline from the Chapman’s minivan was pouring out onto roadway until the Greencastle Fire Department unit arrived on the scene and cleaned it up. That area remained slick from the fuel spill following the accident.

Witt was assisted in the investigation by deputies Brian Helmer and Scott Ducker. Greencastle Police Department also assisted at the scene.

Cox was cited for driving with a suspended license.

Witt estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

Trimble’s towing and Seniour’s Towing took care of the vehicles.
