In demand across the country and internationally while remaining a staple on the local scene, Greencastle-based soul blues singer Tad Robinson and his band will play a free Mardi Gras show at Music on the Square Tuesday in downtown Greencastle. Also on the bill will be New Orleans-style jazz specialists Craig Brenner & the Crawdads.

With frigid temperatures in the forecast, Greencastle won’t feel much like Mardi Gras on the outside Tuesday night.

However, on the inside of Music on the Square the music should be hot and rich with southern flavor.

At 7:30 p.m., the DePauw Performing Arts Series and the School of Music will present an evening of southern soul, New Orleans jazz and boogie music from Tad Robinson and Band, and Craig Brenner & the Crawdads. The special Mardi Gras concert is free and open to the public.

Based in Greencastle, Tad Robinson is one of the most highly regarded blues and soul singers working today, and he has performed his music at festivals and clubs all over the U.S.A. and internationally.

Nominated for numerous blues and soul music awards, Downbeat magazine has described Tad as “near the top of the list of finest living singers of soul blues.” Robinson received an Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship that allowed him to record in Memphis, Tenn., with members of the great soul band, the Hi Rhythm Section, some of which he will be performing at this concert.

The fruits of those sessions in Memphis, the forthcoming album “Real Street,” will be released on Severn Records soon.

Craig Brenner is also an Indiana-based musician who has received numerous grants and fellowships from the Indiana Arts Commission. Living Blues magazine called Brenner “a fine and funky pianist,” and he is in great demand to play New Orleans style.

The public is invited to join them and let the good times roll at Music on the Square, 21 N. Indiana St., Greencastle.
