Virgil Eugene Thompson, age 94, died on Friday, March 15, 2019.

He was born in St. Marie, Ill., on Sept. 24, 1924. He was the son of the late Daisy Gerber Thompson and Edward Thompson.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen Thompson, and his second wife, Madeline Thompson.

He is survived by his two sons, Randy Thompson and Drew Thompson of Brazil; two stepsons, Tommy Brown of Greencastle, and Calvin (Janie) Shrader of Brazil, one stepdaughter, Joyce (Doug) Clodfelter of Brazil; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As a young man he loved working on farms, and he joined the U.S. Air Force at an early age. He was in the Air Force and flew in a B-29 and was a radio/radar operator in 1942. He traveled to China, India and was on the Tinian Island when the bombers took off from there for Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

After the war he worked for IBM for 37 years before retiring. He managed Lamp Light Manor in Brazil for years.

He was a member of the Philadelphia Church of God. He was very knowledgeable of the Bible. He was a true gentleman to everyone he met and he was loved dearly by his family.

Visitation will be at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., Brazil, on Tuesday, March 19 from 2-3:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery.
