John L. Franklin

John L. Franklin, 90 years young, most recently of Navarre, Fla., passed away on March 15, 2019 in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.

A memorial service is being planned back home again in Indiana in the summer of 2019.

John was born Jan. 16, 1929 in Worthington, Ind.

He attended Indiana University where he received his bachelor's and eventually his master's degree in teaching.

He entered the Marine Corps upon graduation and served as a "Remington Raider" during the Korean War.

Upon discharge in late 1953, he married Marcia Trace Morris.

John began teaching in the Greencastle Community School System in 1955 and taught in both the junior high school and high school.

He and Marcia lived and worked in Greencastle, where they raised their three sons. They retired in 1994 after teaching 49 years.

During that time, he also taught new teachers "how to teach" at the University of Tennessee, Ohio University, Indiana State University and DePauw University.

His other passions included antiques (as the former owner of Dogwood Lane Antiques in downtown Greencastle), IU basketball and theater.

He was one of the original founders of the Putnam County Playhouse in Greencastle.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marcia in 2003.

He is survived by his sons, Jay (Powder Springs, Ga.), Rob (Mary Esther, Fla.) and Joe (Albuquerque, N.M.); his daughters-in-law, Judy, Nit and Mindy; his grandchildren: Jayson (and wife Sarah), Kaitlin, Nicole, Sarah and Eli; and his great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Ruby, John Ambrose, Fern, Ignatius and Lazarus.
