Suspect in custody in Crown Street stabbing

Police had a suspect in custody Tuesday evening in connection to a possible stabbing on Greencastle’s South Side earlier in the day.

A 46-year-old man was taken to an Indianapolis hospital with multiple stab wounds.

While Greencastle Police Department officials confirmed that they had detained a suspect, they were not planning to release any further information — including the identity of either party — until Wednesday morning at the earliest.

The incident happened in the 700 block of Crown Street, with Putnam County Dispatch calling the Greencastle Police Department and other agencies to the scene shortly before 2:45 p.m.

The victim was was awake and alert when responders arrived on the scene, telling them he had been stabbed multiple times in the kidney area.

Operation Life transported him to the Putnam County Airport, where a StatFlight helicopter waited to airlift him to Methodist Hospital.

As of 6 p.m., GPD reported having a suspect in custody.

A female witness reportedly saw two men fleeing the scene, with a heavy-set man with sandy brown hair as the stabbing suspect. The man may also have had facial injuries.

The other man was described as skinny with blond hair.

They were reportedly driving a maroon passenger vehicle, last seen westbound on Hanna Street. DePauw Public Safety was notified, as it was likely that the vehicle passed through campus.

The incident took place in the immediate vicinity of Ridpath Primary School as well as blocks from the DePauw campus. Fortunately, both schools are on spring break, leaving no students at Ridpath and a minimum number of DePauw students still on campus.

Had Greencastle Community Schools been in session, the incident would have been taking place just minutes before dismissal, with parents and buses likely already lined up to pick up Ridpath students.

Other agencies taking part in the response and investigation included the Greencastle Fire Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Cloverdale Police Department and the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office.
