Catherine 'Kitty' Long

Monday, April 1, 2019

The daughters of Catherine "Kitty" Long would like to share with their friends and community both the life and passing of Kitty on March 28, 2019.

Mom died at home with family and her best buddy, ChoLo.

She was born in Fithian, Ill., to Perry Spangler in 1925. He is now deceased.

Like most Americans at that time, her father lost everything to the Depression of 1929. Mom and her brother, Bob, went to live in an orphanage in Lafayette for the next six years until reunited with their father and little sister Betty. Both siblings are now deceased.

Mom married Marvin Long in 1946. They shared 67 years until Dad passed in 2013.

Mom worked hard with her three girls, Mary Long Roberson, Lisa Long Bishop and Melanie Long Gibbs, to help them to become strong women with kind hearts. Her guiding light lives in all of us.

Whether working at DePauw University, in her home or helping our Dad at Marvin's Pizza, she tried to be kind, use integrity and do the right thing. She led her diverse family of three generations with loyalty and love.

She leaves her legacy in her daughters, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind her beloved niece, Sara Jo Ward Forthmann and family; her son in heart, Tony Sparks, and her niece, Judy Sorestadt.

Please join us Saturday, April 6 from 2-5 p.m. on the east terrace of the Inn at DePauw to share your stories of our mother and celebrate her life with us.
