Ivy Tech Community College Greencastle has named Jacob Widner as its new Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP) associate director, effective March 18.

ASAP helps high school graduates earn an associate degree in 11 months, preparing them to transfer to a four-year college to earn a bachelor’s degree. Graduates of the program transfer to a variety of universities such as Indiana University, Ball State University and Purdue University.

The rigorous and rewarding program offers students wraparound services to support them throughout their time at Ivy Tech, which is one of Widner’s areas of focus. Students learn in five eight-week terms from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in close-knit cohorts.

As ASAP associate director, Widner will connect with Putnam County high schools to build the fourth cohort. In this role, he will provide one-on-one academic advising and student affairs services to students in the program. To keep students engaged, he plans to build in “Flex Friday” experiences for ASAP students to attend college visits and participate in team-building activities and community service projects.

“I am excited by the opportunity to work directly in a community that has meant so much to me over the last four years,” Widner said.

“The ASAP program has such a powerful opportunity for many students in the Putnam County area and I am committed to building partnerships with local schools and community organizations to provide access to many more students,” he added. “The culture surrounding ASAP must continue to be positive and growth-oriented to impact student lives after high school.”

The recent DePauw University graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in English writing, with a minor in economics. He was a student in DePauw’s Management Fellows program where he developed strong networking, resume-building and interview skills and techniques.

Widner has always loved volunteering in his local community and has been a “Big” mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters for Cloverdale and a substitute teacher for local middle schools. Widner enjoys working with local Boy Scout troops and spending time outdoors.
