Possible human remains near Lieber turn out to be deer

CLOVERDALE -- For about 90 minutes Tuesday evening, area authorities thought they might have a death investigation on their hands.

About 5:30 p.m. a mushroom hunter searching for morels in the vicinity of 11587 Meridian Line Rd. near Lieber State Recreation Area called 911 to report finding possible human remains.

Besides Putnam County Sheriff’s Department personnel, three Indiana Conservation Officers, accompanied by a K9, headed to the scene in southwestern Putnam County, police scanner traffiic indicated.

Early speculation even centered around the possibility the remains might be those of a missing Owen County person.

However, just before 7 p.m., Putnam County Sheriff Scott Stockton cleared up the mystery with a simple text.

“Stand down,” he stated, informing the Banner Graphic and others that the remains were that of a deer.

Meanwhile, Owen County authorities continue to look for a woman whose family has not been able to contact her for weeks.

Family members of Christine M. Holland contacted the Owen County Sheriff’s Office to report her missing on Feb. 20. Her last whereabouts are unknown.

Holland, 43, has blue eyes and blond hair. She is approximately 5-feet-5-inches tall, and weighs about 160 pounds.
