James Edward Maxwell

James Edward Maxwell, 79, of Greencastle, passed away Wednesday evening, April 10, 2019 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

James was born in Akron, Ohio on April 12, 1939, the son of Glenn and Opal (Rosenbaum) Maxwell, and was a graduate of Angola High School.

Mr. Maxwell earned his bachelor's degree in business and sociology from Valparaiso University. He did post-graduate studies at Battelle Institute of Columbus, Ohio and management studies at Virginia Highlands College in Bristol, Va.

He was a devoted member and past president of Kiwanis and was a very active member of Greencastle Christian Church, as well as a member of Windy Hill Country Club.

He began his career in Greencastle as assistant manager of Montgomery Ward. Later, he became director of marketing and research with Abbott Laboratories until he retired.

James was an avid Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks fan.

He loved God, his family and lived life to its fullest.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta (Duncan) Maxwell; four children, Karen Hagan, Kevin Maxwell, Chip Kessler (wife Rhonda) and Christina Bittles (husband Rick); eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jerri Delong; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 15 at Greencastle Christian Church with Pastors John Tischer and Mark Miller officiating. Burial will follow in New Providence Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, and one hour prior to time of service at the church.
