For the Eagle girls, several personal records were set on a great afternoon on Tuesday.

“Although the girls lost the meet, there were quite a few positives to take from the action,” coach Brandon Welti said.

In the field events, PRs came crashing down. Bree Mahoney-Sutherland continued her dominance in the shot with a first-place finish and a huge PR.

She improved her personal best by nearly two feet. Fellow sophomore Brooke Robertson also left the meet with two PRs in the throwing events, improving her discus throw by over a foot and her shot by nearly two feet.

In the long jump, freshman Lilly Vittetow made her outdoor debut and won the event with a solid jump.

“Lilly carried her momentum from the field to the track as she then went on to improve her hurdle PRs with second place finishes in both the 100 and 300 hurdles,” Welti said.

Welti thought the standout performer of the night on the track may have been junior Alex Bratcher.

“She saw improvement in both the 100 and 200 races where she finished second and third,” he said. “Though she didn’t get the win, her competitiveness and drive helped her to come away with two strong personal best times.”

Welti noted that Bratcher wasn’t done there.

“Alex also made her season debut in the 1600 relay, where she ran the fastest split for the team,” he said. “Overall, it was a great night on the track for Alex.”

Other top performances include Bayli Clampitt’s first-place finish in the 400m.

“Bayli knocked nearly two seconds off of her previous best time,” Welti noted. “Fellow freshman Sarah Jones continued her strong, consistent distance racing with a first-place finish in her 3200 debut. She also came away with a new PR split in the 3200 relay.”

Lone senior Samara Young also ran a PR split in the 3200 relay and then came back to win the 1600.

• Eagles compete at Northview — In bad conditions last week, South Putnam competed in a quadrangular meet at Northview.

“Despite the weather and some organizational delays, we had a pretty good evening at Northview,” South boys’ coach Nathan Aker said. “I thought our relay teams did a nice job despite the conditions. Credit to the kids and coach [Matt] Thoennes and coach [Heath] Pruitt for having the guys ready to go against good competition.”

Winning events at Northview were Kain Gregory in the high jump, Austin Rumley in the 1600 and 800, Karl Egold in the 400 and the 4x400 and 4x800.

South girls’ coach Brandon Welti also noted his team’s ability to overcome obstacles.

“This meet presented a fair number of challenges, with cool temperatures, off-and-on rain, timing system malfunctions and strong competition,” he said. “Despite all of these obstacles, the girls’ track and field team still came away with some solid performances.”

Sophomore Bree Mahoney-Sutherland was the lone Eagle winner, placing first place in the women’s shot put.

“Bree has been strong all season in the throwing events, and this meet was no different,” Welti said. “As the season progresses, we expect to see continued success from Bree in the field events.”

On the track, Welti noted his team had numerous personal or season records.

Among those seeing the most improvement was freshman Lilly Vittetow, who improved her 100 hurdles time by nearly three seconds, and she also knocked three seconds off of her split for the 1600m relay.
