Golf

Greencastle 168, Cloverdale 212 — At Clover Meadows, Jaxon Parmley of Greencastle was the medalist with a 40 .

Conner Taylor and Benton Parmley each added a 41, while Vincent Martaglio had a 46 and Tyler Rodgers a 52.

For the Clovers, Michael Holsapple led the way with a 47. Wyatt Helterbrand added a 48, while Cody Morris shot a 58, Josh Allen had a 59 and Kyle Thomas added a 64.

Greencastle coach Steve Paquin thought his team put together a consistent nine-hole round in picking up the win.

“Getting into the scoring mix was freshman Vincent Martoglio with a 46, while Lathen Worman had his best scoring round of the year with a 48. Only three of the seven GHS players had played the front nine, so this was more impressive due to the lack of knowledge of the holes being played. “

Paquin thought his players both hit quality shots and chipped and putted well.

“Benton had a very good night driving the ball and hitting greens with his second shots,” Paquin added. “The greens were wet and slow so that made chipping and putting difficult; which caused the Cubs to have more putts than usual. This problem should be taken care of as they play the different greens on the different courses we play. We continue to shoot lower scores and get more experience on the variety of courses we play.”

Clover coach Doug Wokoun thought his team did good things at times, but is still looking for consistency.

“I was a little disappointed in Monday’s effort, but this was a better outing,” he said. “We need to build on the good things we are doing and find some continuity in our play. We are doing enough good things to be optimistic, but the progress never comes soon enough. We have to be patient and continue to work.”

Wokoun noted his players had moments of success on the day.

“Michael and Wyatt both hit good shots through the round, but weren’t able to string together enough of them to sustain any consistency,” he said. “Cody had one rough stretch in the middle of the round, but rebounded toward the end. Josh made some good progress and was able to score on some shots that he had been missing. Kyle showed some improvement over Monday and is not yet seeing the fruits of his good shots, but that will come with experience.”

“What a great tournament we had at Whiteland,” South coach Johnnie Briones said. “Our varsity and JV got in a lot of tennis for the short amount of time we were there. It’s always nice to play somebody different, and at different skill levels.

“We can’t thank AD Tom Starnes enough for getting us in.”

Briones was proud of the performance of his team, especially with a rare schedule of playing three matches in one day.

“Our varsity battled through some injuries and attrition, but battled hard each and every match,” he said. “We finished third overall, and very, very proud of our girls’ performance.”

Briones noted his junior varsity players were also able to play several exhibition matches.

“It was very excited to see them play both singles and doubles,” he said. “They all adjusted very well, extremely proud of their performances.”
