Donald Lowell Chestnut

Donald Lowell Chestnut, 85, of Switz City, formerly of Greencastle, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019.

He was born Oct. 10, 1933 in Elmore Township, Daviess County, Ind., the son of William Herschel and Ruby Eleanor (Reynolds) Chestnut.

Don was a retired property management supervisor for the Indiana State Capitol Buildings and grounds, including the governor's residence and the War Memorial. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Otis Bowen and was given two awards by Gov. Evan Bayh for his service and dedication to the people of Indiana.

After retirement he enjoyed taking care of his mini-farm, located in Putnam County, spending time with family and mowing lawns. He also enjoyed taking back road trips around the state.

He was a member of the Shiloh Church of God in Daviess County, Odon Masonic Lodge 303 and Indianapolis Scottish Rite.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald E. Chestnut; and three brothers, Elmer D., Harold Ray and Jack Chestnut.

He is survived and remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his wife, Wilma, just celebrating 50 years of marriage together; a son, Steven Chestnut; granddaughter, Jennifer (Paul) Blagg; two great-grandsons, Kaedon and Kody Blagg; two stepsons, Scott (DeAnn) Salee and Jeff (Sherry) Salee and their children; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle. Interment will follow at Little Walnut Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. on Wednesday until time of service at the funeral home.
