Public invited to May 23 community center meeting

Citizens of Greencastle and Putnam County are invited to a community meeting to learn more about the proposed community center.

The community is also invited to provide its input during the 6 p.m. meeting on Thursday, May 23 at Greencastle City Hall.

Local residents interested in learning more about the facility and potential programs are encouraged to attend, as well as individual and groups who have suggestions for future programming. The city continues to work with the YMCA of the Wabash Valley as the operating partner for the facility.

City Hall will open at 6 p.m. to welcome guests with a presentation at 6:30. The presentation will cover the recent history of the project, the building design, proposed programs and services and critical next steps.

The audience will be encouraged to offer input on proposed programs and make suggestions for programs to consider.

Officials from the city, Wabash Valley YMCA, Bona Vita Architecture and the national YMCA will be available to answer questions and listen to community suggestions.

Earlier this spring, the Greencastle Redevelopment Commission purchased the Ballard Farm on State Road 240 as the site for the community center. The site is large enough to accommodate future expansion, parking and outdoor activity space.

The site also is adjacent to the community’s trail system to allow for access by pedestrians and cyclists.

“We encourage Greencastle and Putnam County citizens and community groups to participate in the May 23 meeting to give input on the proposed community center,” Mayor Bill Dory said. “This is a community center for the entire county. The information we receive from the community during the meeting will directly impact programming opportunities and space needs as the building design is finalized.”
