PREP ROUNDUP: Greencastle boys' golf wins third straight WIC title
SPENCER — Greencastle’s Tiger Cubs won their third consecutive WIC golf tournament Saturday at Rolling Meadows GC.
Led by Conner Taylor’s 76 and Jaxon Parmley’s 77, the Cubs shot a score of 323 to beat runnerup Northview by 13 shots.
Benton Parmley added a 82, while Vincent Martoglio shot a 88 and Tyler Rodgers had a 94
“The tournament was played in cool, windy conditions on a Rolling Meadows course that made shot-making difficult and pin placements that were tough to putt,” Tiger Cub coach Steve Paquin said. “Conner and Jaxon were the only Tiger Cub players that have played Rolling Meadows in tournament conditions, so give a lot of credit for the victory to our three young and inexperienced players Benton, Vincent and Tyler. The improvement and hard work put in by those three and the leadership shown by Conner and Jaxon were the factors that secured the win.”
Taylor finished third overall and Jaxon Parmley was fourth. Parker Van Ness of Brown County and Rece Heckman of Owen Valley shot 74 and 75, respectively.
“The Cubs are playing their best golf of the season, and going into the final matches of the year should continue to lower their scores to make them competitive in the county and sectional tourneys.”
Michael Holsapple led Cloverdale with an 89, while Wyatt Helterbrand shot a 93 and Cody Morris and Josh Allen each shot a 104.
“We have made some progress from the beginning of the season, and this effort was 50 strokes better than our first 18- hole round,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “We still have a road to travel, but we did some encouraging things.
“Michael had a couple of glitches in an otherwise good effort,” Wokoun noted. “He hit some very good shots through the round and is becoming much more consistent. Wyatt was much the same way, with a number of pretty good holes, and some frustrations on a few holes. Both of them played pretty solid rounds.”
Wokoun noted that Morris and Allen also showed improvement.
“Match experience is starting to have an effect for them,” he said. “Cody basically played bogey golf for about two-thirds of the round, but in the other third had some consistency issues. He is making more good shots with each effort, and his consistency is getting better.
“Josh had his best effort of the season on the back nine. Consistency is still an issue for him, but this was a very encouraging step in the right direction.”
Greencastle returns to Rolling Meadows on Wednesday to meet Owen Valley, while Cloverdale (3-6) is idle until hosting the county tournament on May 21 at Clover Meadows.
Team scores — Greencastle 323, Northview 336, Owen Valley 339, Edgewood 345, Indian Creek 352. West Vigo 359, Brown County 370, South Putnam 379, Sullivan 380, Cloverdale 390, Cascade 399, North Putnam 423
In other golf:
• Cloverdale 202, Cascade 214 — Cloverdale’s Michael Holsapple was the medalist on Monday with a 45 to lead the Clovers.
“Michael had some good stretches in this round, but ran into some issues along the way,” Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. “He did not get off to a good start, and I think that he battled back well as the round progressed.”
Wyatt Helterbrand shot a 48, while Cody Morris had a 53, Kyle Thomas shot a 56 and Josh Allen added a 66.
“This match has historically been a trap for both teams,” Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun noted. “Neither has played very well over the years, coming right after the conference meet on Saturday. Both Coach [Shawn] Alspaugh and I were concerned at the start about how our players would respond after Saturday.”
Wokoun noted his remaining players also overcame bad shots with good ones.
“Wyatt likewise had some stumbling blocks through the round, although at times he was able to string some shots together,” he said. “Both players were frustrated with aspects of the round and felt they left too many shots on the course, but that is part of the game.
“Cody had an up-and-down effort,” Wokoun added. “He did not putt as well as he had been of late. Kyle had several good holes, but stumbled a few times. He has made some significant strides over the last two weeks, and as he finds some consistency, his scoring will even out. Josh struggled at the start, and never really found a comfort level.
“All three of these are young players fighting to get better; as they have gained experience, they are starting to show some admirable progress.”

Clover coach Jim Spencer noted that Macie Couch pitched “a great game,” giving up two earned runs and striking out six.
“Once we adjusted to the pitching in the fourth inning, we just kind of busted loose at the plate,” Spencer said, noting that Haley Smith hit a grand slam in the fourth to put the Clovers up 5-1. “We had a lot of really solid hits against a very good team. Defensively, we were able to get out of jams again with good pitching and fielding with two outs.”
