BLOOMINGTON — North Putnam’s 4x100 relay team finished third in the Bloomington North boys’ track and field regional on Thursday, earning a spot in next week’s state finals at Indiana University.

The quartet of Kalib Lawrence, Colton Clifford, Chris Murray and Scott Proctor turned in a time of 44.14, finishing .06 seconds behind runnerup Bedford North Lawrence and .09 behind the winning Bloomington North squad.

Terre Haute North, which won the race in its sectional last week, was disqualified for an unknown violation.

“The 4x100 team ran well even though it wasn’t a PR,” North coach Joey Holt said. “On a hot night they performed well. They worked all week on securing their handoffs and it paid off big tonight. This was a goal ever since last year and I’m very proud of their effort.”

Although he just missed the state finals, junior Payton Patterson had a PR in the discus. His distance of 152-11 was 22 feet, six inches farther than his seeded distance to earn him a fourth-place finish.

“All of our North Putnam boys performed well,” Holt said. “Payton Patterson PR’d in discus and finished fourth overall. He threw a 152 and has been improving tremendously.

“Payton’s improvements are a credit to his hard work ethic and our thrower’s coach [Scott McColgin] and coach [Dan] Fouts.

The state finals will be on Friday, May 31, at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.

The 4x100 relay will begin at 6:45 p.m.

Four athletes from Putnam County will also return to Bloomington the following day to compete in the girls’ state finals — North Putnam’s Ashley O’Neal, Cloverdale’s Kenzie Stoltz and Greencastle’s Seelye Stoffregen and Sydney Lewis.
