Alice Jane Bennett
Alice Jane (McDonald) Bennett, 96, Brazil passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019 while staying at Exceptional Living Center of Brazil.
Alice Jane was born in Brazil on Sept. 21, 1922 to Elizabeth (Gray) McDonald and Arthur “Doc” McDonald. She grew up in the Donaldsonville neighborhood of Brazil and attended Epworth Church.
After graduating from Brazil High School in 1940, Alice Jane worked at Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Terre Haute.
Alice Jane was a hard-working lady who liked to do things for herself. In order to resume working outside the home, she taught herself to drive using a stick shift International pickup.
In 1984 she retired from Anchor Glass Container Corp. in Terre Haute.
On May 1, 1945, Alice Jane married Melvin Bennett from Reelsville. They continued to live in the Donaldsonville neighborhood and built a little city farm.
Alice Jane enjoyed mowing grass and tending a large garden on their farm. She also canned her own vegetables, churned butter, milked cows and raised chickens, horses, cows and pigs.
Reading, bingo, word puzzles, crocheting, collecting antiques and listening to country/bluegrass music were all favorite pasttimes of Alice Jane. Alice Jane enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well.
Preceding Alice Jane in death were her parents, Elizabeth Gray McDonald and Arthur “Doc” McDonald; her husband Melvin Bennett; a daughter, Melva Alexander; and her siblings, Alberta Pruitt, Ralph McDonald, Virginia Plummer, Margaret Jean Shobe, Leona Shobe and Donald Arthur McDonald.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Jones (Ray) and Kathy Hood (Doug); grandchildren Troy Alexander (Dionne), Andrea Holmes (Jon) and Katie Hood (Ike Vickery); great-grandchildren Brady Alexander, Cora Holmes, Owen Holmes, Margot Vickery and Levon Vickery; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom were special to her.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 5 at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., Brazil, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Steve Blaydes officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
