Brazil Concert Band to play variety this Sunday evening

The Brazil Concert Band will present “On The Corner Of King and Broadway” on Sunday, June 9 at 8 p.m. in Forest Park, rain or shine.

The Brazil Concert Band, with director Matthew S. Huber, will perform the themes from three Broadway musicals this week and band favorites by composer Karl L. King.

In 2004, the Brazil Concert Band performed on Ellis Island in New York City. While there, the musicians saw “Chicago” on Broadway.

In “Selections From ‘Chicago’” arranged by Ted Ricketts, revelers will enjoy All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” “Roxie” and “We Both Reached for the Gun,” all by Fred Ebb and John Kander.

“Selections From ‘Les Misérables’,” arranged by Warren Barker, will include “At The End of the Day,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Master of the House,” “On My Own” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?” by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Herbert Kretzmer.

The third Broadway hit is “Highlights From ‘Guys and Dolls’,” written by Frank Loesser and arranged by Calvin Custer, with “Guys and Dolls,” Luck Be a Lady,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Follow The Fold,” “If I Were a Bell” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

Karl L. King (1891-1971) was a composer, conductor and euphonium player from Ohio who traveled with the biggest names in circuses and with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.

King directed the Fort Dodge, IA Community Band for 51 years and wrote over 300 works for band use.

The Brazil Concert Band will perform King’s “March Ponderoso,” ”The Big Cage” and “Sells-Floto Triumphal” arranged by Andrew Glover, as well as “The Walking Frog” and “The Melody Shop.”

The classical composition for the evening is “Overture Militaire” by Joseph Hadyn and arranged by Joseph Skornicka.

A medley of rock tunes from “Highlights From ‘Jersey Boys’” by Michael Brown includes “Walk Like a Man,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

The Loyal Order of the Moose will serve chicken noodle dinners from the Forest Park concession stand.
