2019 Fair Queen contest set Saturday

Seven young ladies stand ready to accept the Putnam County Fair Queen crown from 2018 winner Raegan Bowling.

The queen contest is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at the Fairgrounds Community Building. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 or free for kids six years old and younger.

Nicole Newgent

Hannah York

Hannah Elaine York of Greencastle is the 19-year-old daughter of Roy and Malinda York.

The Greencastle High School graduate is attending Harrold Beauty Academy, majoring in cosmetology.

Philisha Sanders

She has two siblings, 26-year-old Dustin York and 22-year-old Bailey York.

Hannah is being sponsored by Criss Construction and Goss Oil Company.

She is currently employed by the YMCA.

Madison Short

Hannah is a past 10-year 4-H member, participating in ceramics (10 years), foods (10), microwave foods (10), ATV safety (4), home environment (3), scrapbooking (3), goats (4), swine (2) and Junior Leaders (6).

She received grand champion in ceramics and home environment. Hannah also served as vice president of Junior Leaders and the Greencastle Stars. She was also selected to be the junior director of 4-H camp in 1998. She received the Brookshire 4-H scholarship.

She is currently a member of New Life Baptist Church. In high school, Hannah was active in cheerleading, softball, PIE Coalition, choir and Purple Pals.

A.J. Hornback

Hannah’s hobbies include watching “The Bachelor,” babysitting her baby cousin Dawson, going to church, listening to music, being outdoors, crafting and spending time with family and friends.

She has a passion for doing hair and makeup because she loves making others feel confident in their own skin.

Along that line of thinking, Hannah’s future plans include working in a hair salon in Terre Haute, Avon or Greencastle, beginning at the end of July.

Madison Woodall

Nicole Newgent

Nicole Renae Newgent of Greencastle is the 19-year-old daughter of Bill and Tammy Newgent.

The Greencastle High School graduate is currently attending Anderson University, where she is a nursing major.

Taylor Goss

Nicole has one brother, 23-year-old Jonny.

She is being sponsored by Shuee’s Furniture and Mattress, EAS Heating and Air and J & J Drainage.

She is currently employed at JTN Services and also an Anderson University admissions ambassador.

Nicole is a past 10-year 4-H member in the rabbit barn.

She graduated high school with academic and technical honors diplomas and was in National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. She was also involved in FCA, PIE Coalition, and Latin Club and was an Area 30 ambassador.

She also made the dean’s list during the fall and spring semesters at Anderson University.

Nicole’s hobbies include tennis, cheerleading, intramurals, vacationing, photography, spending Saturday nights at the racetrack and volunteering through her church in the nursery.

Upon graduating, Nicole plans to become a registered nurse. She would also like to further her education and become a nurse practitioner. Her goal is to work as a labor and delivery nurse or a pediatric nurse.

Philisha Sanders

Philisha Grace Sanders of Cloverdale is the 19-year-old daughter of Phillip and Michelle Sanders.

The Ivy Tech Community College business major is a homeschool graduate.

She has three siblings, 30-year-old Benjamin, 29-year-old Christin and 21-year-old Michayla.

Philisha currently works at Starbucks and the Clay County YMCA.

Her sponsor is Eric Wolfe-Prime Real Estate.

Philisha spent 10 years in 4-H as a member of the Greencastle Stars. She was a member of Junior Leaders, as well as 10 years each in sewing, foods and food preservation. She also participated in fashion revue, swine, photography, ceramics and many other projects.

Her accomplishments included the 2018 Tenure 4-H award, the 2018 Spirit of 4-H award and second runner-up in formalwear at the Indiana State Fair.

She is a member of the Greencastle Christian Church youth group.

Philisha enjoys sewing, riding ATVs, ceramics, making memories with family and friends, spending time with and mentoring children and spending time outdoors.

Upon completing her business degree, Philisha plans to open a daycare in the community. She said she enjoys being with children and feels it’s important to teach and guide them.

Madison Short

Madison Nicole Short of Greencastle is the 17-year-old daughter of Sara Thompson and Kenny Short.

She is a recent graduate of Greencastle High School, with plans to attend Wilmington College in Ohio to study agribusiness and business marketing.

Madison has three siblings, 15-year-old Jonathan, nine-year-old Rebekah and five-year-old Dalton.

Her sponsor is Douglas Construction.

She is currently employed at Papa John’s and Big Walnut concessions during baseball season, as well as babysitting for many throughout the community.

Madison is a 10-year 4-H member and 10-year member of the sheep barn. She has also been active in Junior Leaders, serving in various leadership roles, including being the current vice president. She has also been a scramble lamb sponsor in the sheep barn, which she sees not only as a way to give back but as a way to welcome young 4-H’ers.

Her 4-H community building projects have included creative writing, photography, floriculture and home environment.

During her time at GHS, she played two years of volleyball and was also a member of the Key Club.

Madison also served in Arizona at the White Appalachian Mountain Reservation with the Bethel Baptist Church mission team. She also had the opportunity to serve as class project leader/organizer for a community benefit concert that raised money for the Putnam County Non-Food Pantry. She was a senior representative for Leon Photography.

She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working with her 4-H animals and helping younger members in the barn. She is also co-owner of Urban Flare jewelry “because what girl doesn’t love jewelry?”

Besides majoring in agribusiness and business marketing at Wilmington College, Madison plans to triple minor in animal science, animal production and communications. She is anxious to get involved on campus with the Business Club and Collegiate 4-H, among other organizations.

A.J. Hornback

Aspen Jade “A.J.” Hornback of Coatesville is the 20-year-old daughter of Steffanie Campbell.

The North Putnam High School graduate also has her associate’s degree in agricultural science from Northern Oklahoma College. She is currently a junior at Oklahoma State University, double majoring in animal science and agricultural communication.

She has one brother, 23-year-old Cale.

A.J. is currently employed by Martin Livestock and Final Drive Photography.

She was a 10-year 4-H member, participating in cattle, sheep and swine.

Additionally, A.J. was heavily involved in FFA at North Putnam, participating in livestock judging, dairy foods judge and parliamentary procedure. At Northern Oklahoma College, she served as reporter of the Aggie Club and member of the sheep show team. She plans to also be on the livestock judging team at Oklahoma State.

A.J. is interested in all aspects of livestock and the people who come along with it. She loves to show animals and be involved with the National Junior Swine Association as much as possible.

She describes photography as a new passion that has taken her life by storm. She also has a huge drive for the Grant’s House Foundation and #54.

A.J.’s future plans involve graduating from Oklahoma State and pursuing a career in the agriculture field. She hopes to work in the pork industry with either the National Pork Board or the National Junior Swine Association.

She also wants to work with children with special needs and help them get more involved in the agriculture world to help them grow not only as individuals but into leaders themselves.

Madison Woodall

Madison Sue Woodall of Greencastle is the 20-year-old daughter of LeeAnn Woodall and Erich Schroeder.

The Greencastle High School graduate is currently a strategic communications major at Butler University.

She is currently employed at the Putnam Inn Family Restaurant, which is also her sponsor for the competition.

Madison spent 10 years as a member of the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club. She participated in scrapbooking, photography and cake decorating.

She was also a member of Girl Scouts for 12 years, receiving the bronze award. She is a member of First Baptist Church, Greencastle. At Butler, Madison is a writer for Her Campus and a member of Be the Voice, a club that focuses on domestic violence awareness.

Madison enjoys watching crime series on Netflix as well as trying out Pinterest recipes. She said she also enjoys her job at the Putnam Inn, working whenever she can.

Upon graduating with a degree in strategic communications and English literature, Madison hopes to become a charitable event planner but to eventually switch to writing full time.

Along with school and her career, Madison said she is excited to eventually get married and start a family, preferably with a lot of dogs.

Taylor Goss

Taylor Nicole Goss of Cloverdale is the 19-year-old daughter of Gordon and Rachel Goss.

The Cloverdale High School graduate is now enrolled in Purdue University, studying ag sales and marketing.

She has two siblings, 23-year-old Heather and 17-year-old Morgan.

Taylor is currently employed as a sales associate at Buckle in Lafayette and is interning with Nutrien Ag Solutions.

She is sponsored by Country Beauty by Brooke.

A 10-year 4-H member, Taylor was a member of the Lucky Clovers 4-H Club. Her projects included 10 years of swine; six years of sheep, cattle and rabbits; four years of photography; two years of cake decorating; and six years of Junior Leaders.

At Purdue, Taylor is actively involved in Shoemaker Cooperative, Block and Bridle and Purdue Cattleman’s Association.

She was the District VII president, chapter president and member of FFA. She was a state winner in ag sales demonstration and ag sales CDE and 2017 high individual at area livestock judging contest.

In high school, Taylor was a member of National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, student council and Spanish club.

Her hobbies include showing pigs with her sister on the weekends, going shopping and spending time with friends and family. Her talents include making friends easily and making sure others around her are happy. One interest is participating in community service and helping people in need.

Taylor’s future plans include graduating from Purdue in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in ag sales and marking with a minor in crop sciences. She then hopes to pursue a career in seed or chemical sales in the agriculture field.
