Sheriff’s Department

A Greencastle man was charged with a pair of misdemeanors following a Saturday, July 5 single-vehicle crash.

At approximately 3:40 a.m., Logan J. Pizzo, 28, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2003 Honda Civic when it ran off the road. The car first hit a tree with the right side, causing it to rotate around and hit another tree before rolling onto its side.

A witness on the scene told Deputy Robert Soilleux that he stopped when the man in the car, who was bleeding from the head and leg, flagged him down. Pizzo reportedly said he had already called 911 but he needed to use the person’s phone.

However, Soilleux reported that the wreck had been called in by a passing motorist.

Pizzo’s girlfriend arrived and told Soilleux that Pizzo had been driving back into town to retrieve something for her when she got a call saying he had wrecked.

Pizzo, who already had a suspended license, initially told the deputy that his girlfriend had been driving when a tire blew, causing her to lose control.

When Soilleux told Pizzo that his girlfriend had said he was driving, he admitted to being behind the wheel.

Soilleux also said there was no tire damage.

Pizzo told Soilleux he took off his seat belt because his hat, cell phone and cigarettes had fallen off the middle console and he could not reach them otherwise.

He said he reached to get them and the next thing he remembered was being off the road and into a tree.

Pizzo was charged with misdemeanor driving with a suspended license and driving without proof of financial responsibility.

The vehicle was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
