Newgent crowned 2019 Miss Putnam County Fair Queen

Saturday, July 13, 2019

The Miss Putnam County Fair Queen Contest has a rich history dating back to 1958. On Saturday night, the latest young woman to wear the crown added her name to the list.

Out of the seven young women who have competed, interviewed and bonded over the past several weeks, Nicole Newgent was named the 2019 Miss Putnam County Fair Queen.

Newgent is a 2018 graduate of Greencastle High School and a sophomore at Anderson University.

Newgent says she is proud of herself and is “very excited for the week and to represent Putnam County.”

During the fair queen contest, the seven contestants were interviewed by the judges and began getting ready for their big performance that evening. Before the night of the contest, the young women met together with the 2018 Miss Putnam County Fair Queen Raegan Bowling where they each shared their testimonies on their life and what led them to compete for the title of Miss Putnam County Fair Queen.

The most common phrase they all kept in their hearts reads: “she believed she could so she did.”

“All of us (the contestants) bonded together, sticking together like glue,” Newgent said. “It was a great experience for all of us. All of the girls are amazing, so friendly and so kind to everybody at all times.”

Being involved in the Putnam County 4-H Fair for 10 years, Newgent said the skills taught in and out of the fair led her to become an admissions ambassador at Anderson and also to recently be accepted into the Anderson University School of Nursing, where upon her graduation she is hoping to continue her education to become a labor and delivery nurse.

Newgent is joined on the 2019 court by First Runner-Up A.J. Hornback and Second Runner-Up Taylor Goss.

Receiving Miss Congeniality was Hannah York, a 2018 graduate of Greencastle High School and a recent graduate of Harrold Beauty Academy. York also shared her excitement at representing Putnam County.

York said she hopes to inspire young women to “grow and serve in the community and to help build their confidence to face anything that comes their way.”

Madison Woodall received the People’s Choice award for raising $345 out of the total $1,500 raised by the seven contestants.

In her farewell address as the 2018 Miss Putnam County Fair Queen, Reagan Bowling described Newgent’s confidence and poise as “stunning.” Newgent took these words to heart.

“I hope to show the young women of Putnam County to have a positive attitude at all times and how to treat people with respect and kindness and to give a helping hand whenever they can,” Newgent said.

During the Putnam County Fair, the fair queen and her court will be out and about not only helping with shows but also teaching their peers what it means to be a young leader in Putnam County.
