INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana’s Congressional delegation introduced legislation this week honoring the 50th anniversary of the return of our Indiana Rangers from Vietnam.

Company D (Ranger), 151st Infantry, Indiana Army National Guard arrived in Vietnam in December 1968. During their time in country the Indiana Rangers were assigned reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering missions.

Operating deep in enemy territory, Ranger patrols engaged enemy units while conducting raids, ambushes and surveillance missions. “Delta Company” achieved an impressive combat record during its tour in Vietnam.

The men of Company D, 151st Infantry, exited the Vietnam War having been decorated 538 times, more than any other Army infantry company during any one-year period in Vietnam.

District 4 Congressman Jim Baird, himself a veteran who lost his left arm during combat duty in Vietnam, had high praise for his brothers in arms.

“The Indiana Rangers are the only National Guard Infantry unit to serve in Vietnam as a unit and are the most decorated company during a one-year period; they fought with exceptional courage to defend our freedom,” said Congressman Jim Baird. “On behalf of all Hoosiers, I am proud and honored to see Congress recognize their bravery and valor against a hostile enemy.”

Each member of the Indiana delegation offered thoughts on the Indiana Rangers’ service record a half century since their return.

Sen. Mike Braun: “The Indiana Rangers valiantly fought in the Vietnam War with grit and honor protecting our state and country, and we honor their sacrifice on the 50th anniversary of their return.”

Sen. Todd Young: “Fifty years ago, our brave Indiana Rangers returned home from Vietnam. I’m proud to join the Indiana delegation in honoring these Hoosier heroes who served our nation, as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice and did not return.”

Rep. Larry Bucshon: “It is an honor to recognize the 50th anniversary of the return of the Indiana Rangers. The Indiana Rangers fought with bravery and honor in the Vietnam War to protect our great nation, and we must continue to recognize their service and sacrifices.”

Rep. Jim Banks: “50 years ago today, some of Indiana’s finest sons, the Indiana Rangers, returned home from Vietnam. Their valor, grit, and patriotism have come to define what it means to be a Hoosier. May we all strive to live up to their example.”

Rep. Susan Brooks: “Our nation’s Vietnam War veterans did not receive the thanks and recognition they deserved. Today, I’m proud to honor our brave Indiana Rangers on the 50th anniversary of their return home from the Vietnam War for their courageous service to our great state and country.”

Rep. Andre Carson: “The Indiana Rangers’ bravery and courage are testaments to what all Americans have come to expect from Hoosiers: a dedication to country, a commitment to public service, and a willingness to sacrifice for our nation’s strength and prosperity. I’m pleased to introduce this resolution honoring them alongside my Indiana delegation colleagues in the Senate and the House.”

Rep. Greg Pence: “As we mark the 50th Anniversary of their return home from Vietnam, I’m honored to recognize the valiant service and sacrifice of the Indiana Rangers. I’m proud to stand with the entire Indiana delegation to highlight the courage and bravery of our fellow Hoosiers.”

Rep. Jackie Walorski: “Hoosiers are grateful to our brave service members, past and present, who answered our nation’s call to serve. As we mark 50 years since the Indiana Rangers returned home from Vietnam, we honor the sacrifice of these courageous Hoosiers and all who have put their lives on the line to defend our freedom.”

Rep. Pete Visclosky: “I want to thank Sen. Braun and Rep. Baird for taking the initiative to introduce this important legislation in the 116th Congress. I am proud to stand with my fellow Indiana colleagues in supporting this legislation and honoring our brave and selfless Indiana Rangers.”
