Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 4:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Mercedes K. Chadd, 25, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2005 Honda Civic. Jesse Scroggin, 26, Greencastle, was in front of Chadd in a 2002 Dodge Ram.

Chadd told Deputy Riley Houghton that the truck in front of her “slammed on their brakes” and she did not have time to avoid the collision.

Scroggin said the vehicle in front of her had come to a stop and once she had applied her brakes, the vehicle behind her had rear-ended the truck.

Chadd’s child was in the car with her and the seat belt caused bruising and soreness to the child’s collarbone area. Chadd called her boyfriend and he arrived on the scene to take the child to Putnam County Hospital for evaluation.

Additionally, Chadd refused to be evaluated by medical personnel at the scene but called a friend to drive her to the hospital.

Chadd’s vehicle was towed. Houghton estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:16 p.m. on Sunday, Whitney Parker, 22, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 attempting to turn right onto County Road 75 North in a 2010 Audi A4.

Parker told Deputy Riley Houghton that as she turned right, her passenger side tires ran slightly off the road into gravel. She said she did not have time to apply her brakes or maneuver to avoid colliding with a parked 2007 Chevrolet Impala registered to Jerry Nodley, Greencastle.

She said she believed gravel on the new chip and seal roadway caused her tires to lose traction as she turned onto County Road 75 North.

Houghton estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000. Parker’s vehicle was towed.
