Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes

• At 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, John R. Wells, 73, Poland, was westbound on County Road 1000 South in a 2007 Ford F-250.

Wells told Deputy Robert Soilleux the glare of the sun blinded him and he did not realize the road ended.

The truck went straight off the roadway where 1000 South ends at 200 West, entering the ditch and hitting a tree.

Both Wells and his passenger said they were not injured and refused medical aid.

The truck was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Linda Freeland, 60, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 near the County Road 25 South intersection in a 2017 Chevrolet Impala when she sideswiped a guardrail.

Deputy Kyle Lee arrived on the scene to find Freeland still sitting in her car. Lee asked if she was OK and Freeland said she had been having chest pain and passed out, causing the crash.

Lee called for an ambulance to check on her status. Operation Life medics checked her out and she was released to her husband to transport her to the hospital.

The vehicle was driven from the scene. Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 2:05 a.m. on Sunday, Deputy Soilleux was on patrol when he discovered at 2013 Dodge Charger crashed into a ditch at 881 W. CR 1000 South, Cloverdale.

Soilleux said it appeared by tire marks that the vehicle was westbound when it drove off the north side of the road and into the ditch, ramping a driveway and landing 22 feet farther west, where the tire marks reappeared.

Tire marks continued about another 100 feet farther to where the vehicle was found.

The vehicle suffered front end damage as a result of the crash. The front passenger side wheel had also fallen off in the crash.

Soilleux reported a strong smell of coolant at the scene and still signs of steam coming from the front end.

The vehicle was locked with a larger cooler in the back seat. There were also two empty cans of beer at the scene.

After searching the area, Soilleux found the owner of the vehicle, Christopher J. Haines, 28, Indianapolis.

Haines slurred his words, swayed from side to side and had a delayed or extended pause before answering any question. He also smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage.

Haines told Soilleux he was driving westbound when his phone rang and he looked down and back up, which resulted in him driving off the road.

Haines tested at .10 BAC on a portable breath test. He was charged with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated and driving with a BAC of .08 or more.

Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
