BENNETT'S MINUTES: Cleaning up a few mistakes, tracking former coaches

Thursday, August 22, 2019

We take great pride in being accurate with everything that appears in the Banner Graphic sports section, but this week was an unfortunate exception.

Unquestionably hindered by the time-intensive football preview section, a few things appeared in it and the regular Wednesday paper that were inaccurate.

Some were totally my fault, and others were outdated or inaccurate information received earlier. Nothing so earth-shattering that it changes the fabric of our existence, but still things we normally work hard to get correct.

So, for whatever the reason, here is a short recap of corrected information:

• In the list of Western Indiana Conference divisions starting next year, West Vigo was placed in the incorrect division.

The Vikings and Brown County will be in the “small school” division with the four Putnam County schools. The other five schools are in the “big school” division.

• Greencastle lost to Danville in the first round of last year’s football sectional. An incorrect round was listed in the Greencastle story.

• Greencastle’s Gavin Bollman had a change of plans, and now attends Indiana State instead of his original destination of Marian. He is solely focusing on academics at ISU.

• Finally, in a report on the Greencastle-North Montgomery girls’ golf match from Monday the wrong winning team was listed. The two squads tied on their top four scorers, but North Montgomery actually won the match because its fifth player had one fewer shot that Greencastle’s.

On the move

Two former Putnam County coaches have found new jobs near Indianapolis.

• Former North Putnam boys’ basketball coach Collin McCartt had intended to continue teaching middle school business at the school after resigning his basketball post earlier this year, but has accepted a job at Morristown Jr.-Sr. High School in Shelby County.

His new job is only 20 miles from his home on the south side of Indianapolis. The Hornets have a solid basketball program under coach Scott McClelland, winning the Class A state title in 2018.

McCartt had not planned to re-enter coaching immediately, but said this week he might join McClelland’s staff due to the much shorter drive than he had to North Putnam.

• Former Greencastle cross country and track coach Craig Jordan was hired in June by the Franklin Township Community School Corporation to work in its student support services department.

Bits and pieces

• Former Cloverdale football standout Jake Wilkes is moving up the ladder at Culver-Stockton College in Missouri, but the ladder is a tall one with 160 players on the squad.

Wilkes started fall camp as sixth string at his position, but has moved up to fourth string. Don’t be surprised if he’s a starter before very long.

• Another of my former basketball players continues to move up in the college basketball ranks, as Indiana University alum Mike Roberts has returned to Bloomington to take a spot on Archie Miller’s staff.

Roberts grew up in Terre Haute but moved to Oregon during junior high school. Bob Knight brought him back to Indiana, and he played four years for the Hoosiers.

He coached one year at Texas Tech under Knight, and was an assistant at Rice before going to North Carolina-Greensboro for eight seasons.

• Stay tuned for an impending announcement from Putnam County athletic directors about a new traveling trophy to be awarded to the school with the most overall success in county tourneys.

• Cloverdale played a new opponent last week in its football scrimmage, with Pike Central making the long trek to Putnam County.

The Chargers are coached by Dave Stephens, a former offensive coordinator at Greencastle under Josh Buis a few years back.

Stephens had a 1-9 record last year in his first season at Pike Central. His job is a tough one, as the Chargers play in the tough Pocket Conference. They haven’t had a winning season since at least 1994.
