Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 3:16 p.m. on Sunday, Ethan Qualls, 16, Indianapolis, was westbound on County Road 225 South in a 1999 Chevrolet pickup.

Qualls told Deputy Tanner Brown he saw a vehicle stopped on the eastbound side of the road.

He said the other vehicle was on its own side but he thought he might hit it, so he got over further. The right side tires entered the ditch. He was able to steer the wheels back onto the road, but his truck started sliding.

Qualls’ truck then slid across the road. When it entered the ditch on the south side of the road, the truck rolled onto its top in a bean field owned by Cedar View Farms.

Qualls told Brown he had soreness in his left should from the injury. One passenger, 19-year-old Samuel Evans, said he had throbbing lower right side back pain, his head hurt and he had possible swallowed glass. The other passenger, 16-year-old Anthony Adams, said he had a little soreness in his head and shoulder.

All three were transported to Putnam County Hospital for further evaluation.

The truck was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, Deputy Matt Biggs was dispatched to an accident in the Cloverdale High School parking lot.

Barbara and Matthew Robbins of Coatesville said they returned from the football field and found damage to the hood of their 2016 Toyota Camry where someone had backed into it.

A witness approached saying a black Ford F-250 had backed into the car and then moved to a separate parking spot on the other end of the lot. The witness provided the plate number.

Investigating the Camry, Biggs found a piece of rusted metal on the hood that had been left by the truck. He then located the truck, with the matching plate number, a 2008 Ford F-250, and found fresh damage, including a spot where the rusted piece would fit on the pickup.

The driver of the pickup, Jennifer Gibson, 29, Greencastle, was located. She said she did not believe she had backed into the car.

Biggs then explained there was a witness as well as pieces of her truck on the other vehicle.

Gibson then said she had been near the other vehicle attempting to park but decided to move farther down the parking lot due to the size of her truck. She further said that her truck being lifted obstructs her view.

Biggs estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 1:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, Biggs was dispatched to the area of County Road 800 West and 350 South. The caller advised a white tractor pulling an orange Schneider trailer had turned too sharply and crashed with a guardrail. The caller said the driver of the semi had inspected the damage and then continued on County Road 350 South.

While en route, Biggs located the tractor-trailer. He observed the damage as he approached the vehicle.

The driver, Ibrahim A. Abdule, 30, Indianapolis, said he was lost and needing help. The driver was of Somali descent and there was a significant language barrier.

Biggs explained there was damage to the guardrail. The driver showed his phone where he had attempted to call 911. Biggs checked with Putnam County Dispatch and they had not received the call, though mobile coverage could have prevented the call from going through.

Abdule was very distraught and kept repeating that he was lost and needed help.

Biggs gathered information then gave Abdule directions on how to get to the interstate.

Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Danny Fisher, 66, Fillmore, was westbound on County Road 50 South near County Road 475 East in a 2000 Ford Explorer. Joshua Parker, 19, Brazil, was eastbound in a 2007 International straight truck registered to Jack’s Trash Service.

Both drivers told Deputy Brown that they were on their own side but the other vehicle was driving down the center of the road. Both said they got over as far as they could.

However, the two vehicles collided and Parker continued eastbound. Fisher turned around and caught up with Parker. They exchanged information and then Fisher left to make it to a doctor’s appointment.

Neither drivers reported injuries.

Brown estimated damage at less than $1,000.

• At 2:32 a.m. on Friday, Kenneth Brewer, 60, Bainbridge, was westbound on County Road 500 North in a 2003 Ford F-350. Debbie Davis, 55, Greencastle, was eastbound in a 2003 GMC Sierra.

Brewer told Deputy Brown that Davis’ vehicle crossed over into his lane and he drove into the ditch in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, the driver’s side mirrors of the two vehicles struck each other.

Davis told Brown that she was on her side of the road when the mirrors collided.

Brown found the lower part of Brewer’s mirror as well as a small amount of broken glass on the road, about two feet from the north side of the road.

Brewer reported no injuries. Davis had a small amount of dried blood on her leg. She said this was from the window breaking all over here.

Brown estimated damage at less than $1,000.
