James ‘Jim’ Newby

Thursday, September 5, 2019

James “Jim” Newby, 92, of Cloverdale, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019 at his Cloverdale home.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1926 to the late Lee and Edith Newby in Indianapolis.

On June 23, 1950, he married Juanita Harris. She passed away on March 21, 2017.

He served in the U.S. Army during the late 1940s. He was stationed in South Korea and the Philippines.

Upon arriving home from overseas, he opened and operated Newby Texaco on Girls School Road in Indianapolis.

In 1959, he and his family took on a new venture and started a grain and livestock farm outside of Coatesville.

In 1971, he transitioned into working for agricultural equipment dealerships as a technician. He retired in 1990.

He took great pride in doing quality work for the farmers of west-central Indiana. He took so much pride that he was often seen on weekends and cross-country vacations sporting his John Deere green pants, yellow work shirt with “Jim” embroidered on the chest and, of course, a John Deere hat.

He was referred to by many as one of the top agricultural mechanics in the region during that era.

From 1990 to 2002, he and Juanita moved to Inverness, Fla. They quickly found their niche purchasing properties, rehabbing and reselling them.

In 2002, they moved back to Indiana to be closer to family.

Jim is survived by his children, Ernest Newby of Stilesville, Ed Newby (Jo) of Cloverdale, Diana “Dee-Dee” Morrissey of Indianapolis and Donna (Brad) Scott of Brownsburg; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; his parents; a sister, Doris Richhart; and his brother, Glen Newby.

At his request, no services will take place. Condolences may be made at www.whitakerfuneralhome.net.
