Addison Hughes selected as Guerin scholar at SMWC
From the time he made an appearance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee as a precocious nine-year-old, Addison Hughes has been a young scholar to watch in Putnam County.
In the eight years since correctly spelling “ocelot” sent him to Washington, D.C., the honors have kept coming Hughes’ way.
He’s an accomplished singer, trumpet player and actor — fittingly earning a role when GHS staged “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” two years ago.
Hughes has also been part of a state-title winning Spell Bowl team and an Academic Super Bowl social studies team that place third in Indiana.
He’s written for the school newspaper and is active in the Latin club.
With all of this under his belt, Hughes added another honor to the list recently when he was named a Saint Mother Theodore Guerin scholar at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
Hughes is one of just seven students to earn the prestigious scholarship named after Indiana’s first saint and the foundress of SMWC.
The Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship is a full-tuition award granted by SMWC annually to deserving students who embody the principles championed by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin.
The 17-year-old carries with him a passion for the written word. As an English major, he hopes to one day write professionally and to teach English at a college setting.
Hughes works in his church nursery and gives music lessons. He says he aspires to continue his walk with Christ and to introduce Him to as many people as possible.
His passion and faith brought him to The Woods.
“I am excited to uphold the traditions of academic excellence, and more importantly, social and spiritual improvement that both SMWC and the SMTG program provide,” Hughes said.
He can’t wait to learn and make new friends.
Hughes is a fan of Aunt May’s words in “Spider-Man 2,” “I believe there’s a hero in all of us. That keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble and finally allows us to die with pride.”
The rest of the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin cohort includes: Jaelyn Fennell, Terre Haute; Kate Johnson, Avon; Lyric Krause, West Terre Haute; Alicia Lombardo, Danville, Ill.; Emilee Roush, Parish, Ill.; and Jozee Spatta, Spencer.
