Carolyn (Akin) Black Schenk

Carolyn (Akin) Black Schenk, Miss Indiana 1940, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019 at age 98.

For many years, she held the title of oldest living Miss Indiana.

Born on Feb. 11, 1921 to Lorraine and Newland Akin, she was the youngest of six children. All but one, Helen Akin of Sarasota, Fla., preceded her in death, as well as her husband at 36 years old.

Carolyn married Thomas H. Black Jr. in 1942 and he preceded her in death. She married Irvin Schenk in 1993 and he preceded her in death.

She had two children, Dr. Thomas H. Black III and wife Lyn and Barbara Hocker and husband Keith.

She had eight grandchildren, Dr. Laura Black Wicks and husband Dr. Tom Wicks, Dr. Brian Black and wife Alexandra, Jeremy Black and fiancée Juliana Goldsmith, Marti Smith and husband Rob, Dominique Coffman and fiancé Chris Allen, Emily Adams and husband Nick, Kara Hopkins and husband Zach and Kyle Kuebler and wife Melissa; 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She also had several cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom she truly loved.

Our family was truly blessed. We will miss her gentle, quiet way, her beauty and her smile.

Carolyn was a longtime member of Gobin United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be at Gobin United Methodist Church in Greencastle from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14. The service will follow from 4-5 p.m.

Private burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery in Evansville.
