An investigation by the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) recently ended in the Sept. 15 arrest of Barbara Kapaun, 52, of Vigo County.

Prison officials investigated Kapuan, a correctional officer, after receiving allegations that she was involved in an inappropriate relationship with an offender at the Putnamville Correctional Facility.

As a result of the investigation, Kapaun has been placed on emergency suspension pending criminal charges.

Kapuan was arrested and transported to the Putnam County Jail pending charges of Level 6 felony official misconduct and Level 5 felony sexual misconduct by a service provider.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy on this type of misconduct by our staff,” Internal Affairs Lead Investigator James Smith said. “We will arrest and seek prosecution against any employee who chooses to make these decisions.”

Formal charges will be determined by the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office.
