Block party set Sunday to celebrate mural completion
The transformation happening at Veterans Memorial Highway and U.S. 231 is almost complete and the public is invited to a free community block party to celebrate Putnam County’s newest (and biggest) mural.
On Sunday, Sept. 29 from 5-7 p.m., Veterans Memorial Highway will be closed to traffic in order to accommodate a stage for live music, food and drink, face painting, a bounce house and more.
The street closure will take effect from 3-8 p.m. from Putnamville and Cemetery Roads to U.S. 231.
“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the community’s support, so we want to celebrate together and honor the work that it took to make this mural happen,” said Chris Flegal, who leads the Putnam County Mural Project.
The celebration will include short statements by artist Key Detail, Mayor Bill Dory and Flegal, along with music by Tad Robinson Band. Other community leaders from across the state are expected to attend.
Food and drink will be available for purchase from The Putnam Inn, The Inn at DePauw, Wasser Brewing Company, Almost Home and Mallow Run Winery.
Donors to the campaign are encouraged to visit the tented area to pick up their promotional items, as promised through the CreatINg Places Patronicity campaign, which led to the $30,000 match from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
Parking will be available on Veterans Memorial Highway for the duration of the event, accessible from the Putnamville Street and Cemetery Road entrance.
The community block party is sponsored by Crown Equipment Corporation, Buzzi and the Edward Jones Office of Jacqui Ellis. Significant in-kind gifts are being provided by Tad Robinson, Greg’s Audio Support, Big Bounce, Mallow Run Winery and Upland Brewing Co.
Internationally-known mural artist Key Detail has been painting the four large grain silos at the corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and U.S. 231 in Greencastle since Sept. 16 and expects to finish by Sept. 29.
