Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

-At 8:10 p.m. on Monday, Taylor M. Green, 26, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 525 East in a 2015 Dodge Charger when she hit a deer.

Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

-At 9:53 a.m. on Monday, Arthur L. Adams, 46, Reelsville, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2011 Freightliner Argosy dump truck registered to the Putnam County Highway Department.

Adams said he was near the intersection with Country Villa Drive when he noticed he was losing his load of rock. He then stopped and checked, finding that the tailgate was lose and several large rocks had fallen on the roadway.

Adams secured his tailgate and turned around to locate any lost rocks. He returned to find Deputy Brian Helmer already sitting with a second driver who had hit a rock. Adams told Helmer his load had caused the damage.

Scott F. Lawson, 50, Brazil, told Helmer he was approaching Country Villa Drive in a 2016 Nissan Verano when he hit the large rock, which he could not avoid.

The impact caused Lawson’s airbag to deploy, which cut his hand. However, he declined medical attention.

Lawson’s vehicle was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

-At 7:22 a.m. on Monday, Jordan V. Opiela, 16, Poland, was eastbound on County Road 1200 South, stopped at the stop sign to turn north on U.S. 231, in a 2001 GMC Sierra.

As he turned onto the highway, Opiela lost control, with the truck turning back westbound and going into a ditch.

Opeila told Deputy Helmer he did not take off too fast, but the road was wet and his tires were bad. Helmer observed normal wear on the tires.

Neither Opiela nor his younger brother believed they were injured.

The truck was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
