City Sustainability Commission seeking award nominations

Monday, October 7, 2019

It is once again time to recognize Putnam County citizens, organizations and businesses for promoting the environment.

The Greencastle Commission on Sustainability is seeking nominations for awards that will be presented prior to the Greencastle City Council’s meeting on Nov. 12.

The categories are Business of the Year, Best Practices of the Year, Outstanding Citizen of the Year and Young Leader of the Year.

The awards are open to any citizen, business or organization that has demonstrated outstanding efforts to improve the environment.

Last year, the Greencastle Commission on Sustainability honored the Greencastle Department of Public Works, The Castle, as well as Bill Marley and Mary Satterthwaite for their efforts to make Greencastle and Putnam County a more environmentally-friendly community.

Marley was recognized as Outstanding Citizen of the Year for his work with People Pathways. The Greencastle Department of Public Works was recognized for their ongoing project on Veterans Memorial Highway, which honors local veterans. Satterthwaite was honored as Youth Leader of the Year for her involvement in sustainability initiatives throughout her at years at DePauw University as an Environmental Fellow. The Castle, which partners with teachers in Putnam County schools to invigorate the curriculum through arts-integration and project-based learning, was honored for Best Practices of the Year.

Nominations should include the name of the nominee, address, email, phone number and a brief (about two paragraphs) about the nominee’s contributions to the community. They can be submitted at Greencastle City Hall through Oct. 15 or to John Garner at johngailgarner@gmail.com.

The Greencastle Commission on Sustainability was established in 2009 to “enhance the socio-environmental-economic well-being of the community while taking precautions not to compromise the quality of life of future generations.”

The Commission meets at 5 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at Greencastle City Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
