A Greencastle teen escaped with only minor injuries when she rolled an SUV on Manhattan Road late Friday afternoon.

It was just one of seven crashes the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department had worked on wet roads Friday.

The 16-year-old was northbound in a Chevrolet SUV when she came around a curve on the wet road and started to lose control. She told investigating officer Deputy Scott Ducker she hit her brakes and started to skid.

The vehicle crossed the center line and went into the ditch, rolling onto its top.

While Ducker and Deputy Brian Helmer were investigating the rollover, a secondary crash occurred.

A passenger car was stopped in the southbound lane of traffic. Another motor vehicle coming southbound around the curve and couldn’t not stop fast enough, rear-ending the first vehicle.

Following the second crash, officers made the decision to close the road between U.S. 40 and County Road 500 South until crews could clean up the scene. Indiana State Police, the Fillmore Fire Department and Deputy Daniel Birt closed the road.

The officers praised Curtis Wrecker and Seniour’s Towing, as the road had to be closed for only about 30 minutes.

Ambulance crews were also on scene to check out the occupants.

It was a busy day for officers, with seven motor vehicle crashes by early evening.

“Rain was definitely a contributing factor in nearly all of the accidents,” Ducker said.
