Any Way the Wind Blows

Tuesday, November 5, 2019
The CSX railroad tracks north of Greencastle are briefly home to some unique cargo Tuesday morning, as a train hauling the enormous wind turbine blades sits idle on a siding for another train to pass. With each of the giant blades occupying two flat cars, the blades stretch around the distant bend, as far as the eye can see. A number of Indiana counties and communities have embraced the wind turbine technology, while members of other communities continue to fight against the idea of the behemoths dominating the landscape. While no serious push has been made to bring wind farms into the local community, the Putnam County Plan Commission officially approved wind farms as an allowed special exception earlier this year, meaning anyone wishing to place one in the county would have to get specific approval of the Putnam County Board of Zoning Appeals.
