Park pie baking contest slated Friday at DePauw’s Hoover Hall

Monday, December 2, 2019

As we transition from Thanksgiving to the holiday season, the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department invites local bakers to participate in its Seasonal Pie Baking Contest on Friday, Dec. 6.

The contest is a fundraising effort to raise money for community youth programs.

Submit as many pies as you want in any of three categories --sweet potato pies, key lime pies or fruit pies. Entry fee is $5 for the first pie and $3 for additional pies.

A panel of three judges will grade the pies based on taste and presentation and more. Judges will not be allowed to know who made the pies when judging them and will be in a secluded room for the judging process.

Submissions will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Hoover Dining Hall on DePauw’s campus. Judging will begin at 5 p.m. Judges will consist of one of the judges for the 4-H county fair, the head chef for Bon Appetit, and a DePauw University student.

First-, second- and third-place winners from each category will receive ribbons and the first-place winner will receive an embroidered apron (prizes may be adjusted as more sponsors come on board).

Because this is a fundraiser for the Parks Department Youth Program Scholarships, the pies will be sold by the slice for $2 each after the winners are declared.

Registration forms are located at City Hall.

For allergy purposes, bakers are asked to bring a list of ingredients for their pies. Organizers are not asking for recipes, just the list of ingredients.

Early registration deadline is Thursday, Dec. 5.

For more information, persons may contact the Greencastle Parks Department at 653-3395 or email jaelthomas_2022@depauw.edu or erinpasch_2022@depauw.edu.

To pre-register, complete and drop off the registration form with the entry fee at Greencastle City Hall, P.O. Box 607, 1 N. Locust St., Greencastle, IN 46135.
