The Greencastle Summer Music Festival will present a special  “Sweet and Savory Treats” event at 3 p.m. Sunday Jan. 12 at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church to benefit its endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation.

Performances by local musicians, food (“sweet and savory treats”) and drink, plus a silent auction will make for an afternoon of great company and musical delight, bringing a touch of summer to what may or may not be a “bleak midwinter” afternoon.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $20, although any amount is happily accepted.

A growing list of performers includes Claude Cymerman (piano) and Eric Edberg (cello), Ming-Hui Kuo and Josiah Rushing (percussion), and Steve Snyder (jazz piano) and Sandy Williams (jazz guitar). Each is a current or emeritus DePauw School of Music faculty member with an international performing career, except for Rushing, a School of Music alumnus with a growing list of concert credits.

The festival’s founding artistic director, Eric Edberg, explains the musical undertaking.

“Our festival, devoted to bringing a community together with friends making music for friends, started as a way to bring more performing arts events to the summer at a time when there were very few, especially with professional musicians,” Edberg said. “We now have a tradition started of a January event, another time of the year with a little professional concert music. We’re very excited to present this ‘variety show’ format event.”

The event is being underwritten by local artist and author Stu Fabe (the festival’s board president). The silent auction items will include artwork by Fabe, a yoga session with Marla Helton of Serendipity Yoga Studio, a solo-cello house concert by Edberg and gift certificates from a growing list of local restaurants, currently including Almost Home and Moore’s Bar.

The Greencastle Summer Music Festival, founded in 2005, presents free weekly Wednesday evening concerts from Memorial Day through mid-August, educational events for children in the Summer Enrichment Program, and, starting this summer, events at local assisted living facilities.

Its programs are supported by donations from individuals and businesses including the Inn at DePauw and Greenburg Accounting, as well as a grant from the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau and an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation.
