Friday, January 10, 2020

In a meeting that took less that half an hour, the South Putnam Board organized and approved officers for various capacities in 2020 Wednesday evening.

The board voted to retain its current heads into the new year. Hollie Hutcheson will remain as president, Anthony Heavin will continue as vice president and Wes Hacker will still serve as secretary.

The board also kept Hilarie Logan as corporation treasurer, with Terri Beasley acting as deputy treasurer. Beasley was also approved as the privacy officer, and John Zeiner was retained as the corporation’s attorney.

Superintendent Bruce Bernhardt also asked the board to appoint members of a bid opening committee. This body will include himself, Beasley, Logan and board member Larry Bottorff. Bernhardt added that the committee handles purchases over $150,000, at which time they would determine bid specifications.

Prior to the regular meeting, the board also conducted its yearly finance meeting where Bernhardt provided where the corporation stood with income and expenses.

Bernhardt said SPCSC accrued approximately $39,675 in 2019 through its interest-bearing account. He also shared expenditures in individual funds such as rainy day and capital projects. This information, including fiscal indicators like enrollment history, can be found at www.in.gov/duab/2386.htm.

In other business, the board established when its meeting times would be in 2020. The body will meet every second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. - except for Oct. 21, which will coincide with fall break.

The board also recognized South Putnam’s Students of the Month:

• Central Elementary School: Gabe Vela;

• Fillmore Elementary School: Karoline Arnold;

• South Putnam Middle School: Vienna Burkart; and

• South Putnam High School: Nick Warren.

Arnold and Warren were unable to attend Wednesday’s meeting.

The board also approved one personnel item:

• Classified: Jack McCollister, hired as MS/HS part-time custodian.

The next regular meeting of the South Putnam School Board is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in the South Putnam MS/HS Learning Center.
