As police continue to investigate the death of Melissa “Lisa” Atkisson, nearly 100 donors have spent recent days raising funds for her burial.

Started Thursday, just a day after the public learned the news of Atkisson’s death, a GoFundMe fundraiser has already made significant progress toward paying for her funeral expenses.

As of Friday afternoon, 95 different donors had contributed a total of $4,930 toward the goal of $10,000.

Atkisson leaves behind two sons, Devan and Damon Atkisson, who are now saddled with planning and paying for her unexpected funeral.

Melissa Warner of Roachdale started the fundraiser, asking that the community help the two young men who are already grieving.

“Losing a parent is a deep pain that will last a lifetime,” Warner wrote on the GoFundMe page. “I’m pleading with all of her friends, her family, her co-workers, and simply anyone who has been affected by this tragedy to please donate to help her boys give their mother the burial she deserves.”

“Lisa loved her people fiercely,” Warner wrote. “Please help us show her that same kind of love in her final goodbye. If you are unable to donate, I simply ask that you pray for her family.”

Detectives are investigating Atkisson’s death as a homicide.

Police were called to the home around 11:30 p.m., finding the body of the 44-year-old in her East Berry Street home.

At this point, investigators have not named a suspect. A Greencastle Police Department spokesman said detectives spent Friday following up on leads and continuing their investigation.

On Thursday, the department representative said he believed there was no reason for the public to worry, calling it an isolated incident.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call (765) 848-1644 and leave a detailed message or call (765) 653-2925.

The department also welcomes messages through Facebook Messenger.
