County Jail

Four people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Tuesday

• At 12:59 a.m. Samantha Archer, 41, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail for neglect of a dependent and possession of methamphetamine.

• At 12:39 a.m. Corbin R. Acton, 18, Plainfield, was taken into custody on a court order.

Monday

• At 4:08 p.m. Michael A. Owens, 36, Greencastle, was housed at the jail as a habitual traffic violator.

• At 1:39 p.m. Zachary L. Benassi, 26, Fillmore, was booked in on a local warrant.

City Police

Two recent citations were issued by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 1:37 p.m. Saturday, Ellen L. Stoelting, 33, Greencastle, was stopped on Percy Julian Drive by Sgt. Ed Wilson.

Stoelting was cited for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

She was also arrested and lodged in the Putnam County Jail on a Putnam County warrant for domestic battery and criminal recklessness.

• At 5:19 p.m. Friday, Melinda Byrd, 42, Brazil, was cited by Officer Brad Hiatt.

Stopped on West Walnut Street, Byrd was cited for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense and for operating a motor vehicle without financial responsibility.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated one recent property-damage crash.

• At 8:37 a.m. on Tuesday, Heather L. Whitaker, 48, Greencastle, was stopped in the northbound lane of U.S. 231 waiting for traffic to clear so she could turn into the driveway at 1196 N. U.S. 231 in a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe. Whitaker said her turn signal was on.

Whitaker told Deputy Tanner Brown she saw a vehicle approaching in her rear-view mirror and knew it was not slowing down.

Kathleen R. Amerman, 21, Clinton, was northbound in a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. She told Brown she did not see Whitaker’s vehicle until the last second and could not avoid rear-ending it.

Amerman said she was tired due to not being able to sleep on recent nights.

Neither driver was injured.

Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to three recent dispatches:

• At 12:58 p.m. on Monday, GFD was called to 801 Indianapolis Rd. for an unauthorized burn. Units arrived at 1 p.m. to find an individual burning leaves. GFD advised of the city burn ordinance and the individual began burning sticks instead. GFD went back into service at 1:32 p.m.

• At 2:26 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to 610 Longcastle Dr. for a public assist call. Units arrived at 2:40 and assisted with changing batteries in a smoke detector. GFD went back into service at 2:49 p.m.

• At 3:02 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle accident at 2200 E. State Rd. 240. Units arrived on the scene at 3:13 and cleaned fluid from the roadway. GFD went back into service at 3:29 p.m.

Additionally, GFD performed three medical assists after these dispatches.
