JV Cubs get county tourney sweep

Greencastle won the boys' junior varsity basketball Putnam County title on Saturday.

Less than 24 hours after its varsity team won the Putnam County championship, Greencastle’s junior varsity team completed the same feat by defeating South Putnam 52-49 in overtime in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Cole Hutcheson led the Tiger Cubs with 22 points in the championship game win, while Tyler Rodgers had 18.

Matthew Goodpaster had 17 points to lead South, while Nate Clearwaters had 16 and Landon Clark added nine.

South led 13-12 after one quarter, but Greencastle took a 26-22 halftime lead.

South had a huge third quarter, pouring in 16 points to assume a 38-33 lead entering the final period.

Greencastle hit 8 of 10 free throws in the final period to send the game into overtime, then got three points each from Rodgers and Hutcheson in the extra period to pull out the win.

In the semifinal round, Greencastle defeated Cloverdale 45-38.

Hutcheson led Greencastle with 12 points, while Keifer Wilson had nine.

Levi Hilton led Cloverdale with 15 points, while Seth Firkins and McGuire Lee each had seven.

Greencastle led 12-5 after one quarter, 21-13 at halftime and 28-20 after three quarters.

South Putnam defeated North Putnam in the other semifinal game.
