County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 11:07 p.m. Nicholas G. Smith, 41, Coatesville, was lodged at the jail for leaving the scene of a property-damage accident.

Saturday

• At 10:09 p.m. Matthew M. Miller, 36, Fillmore, was taken into custody for theft.

• At 4:23 p.m. Dennis W. Williams, 69, Jamestown, was housed at the jail for driving with a suspended license.

• At 3:57 p.m. Mellisa A. Church, 41, Fillmore, was booked in for theft.

Friday

• At 5:21 p.m. Kysung L. Tisdale, 19, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail for theft.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:25 p.m. Sunday, Nathaniel M. Thompson, 29, Crawfordsville, was northbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 1000 North in a 2016 Hyundai Elantra when he hit a deer.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 6:40 p.m. on Saturday, Jason D. Vanatti, 36, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2010 Ford Mustang when a deer ran into the driver side fender.

The car had to be towed. Deputy Daniel Birt estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 6:40 a.m. on Thursday, Jorge L. Santiago-Castellanos, 30, Crawfordsville, was southbound on County Road 200 West in a 2008 Toyota Tacoma.

Santiago-Castellanos told Deputy Kyle Lee that as he entered a ditch, he slid off the roadway in the slick conditions.

The vehicle entered the ditch, hitting a phone connection box as well as a utility pole.

Santiago-Castellanos was not injured in the crash.

Upon further investigation, Lee discovered that Santiago-Castellanos did not have a valid driver’s license and he received a summons to appear in court.

The truck was towed. Lee estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to eight recent dispatches:

• At 11:24 a.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Delta Upsilon for a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 11:26 and were advised that construction was being done. The alarm was reset, and GFD left at 11:36 p.m.

• At 3:07 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle accident without injuries at 1230 N. Jackson St. Units arrived on the scene at 3:09 and removed debris and handled traffic control. GFD went back into service at 3:24 p.m.

• At 5:40 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Bloomington Street Hall for a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 5:44 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at 5:58 p.m.

• GFD was dispatched to the Blanchard House duplex for two consecutive alarms Saturday morning:

- At 12:44 a.m., GFD was dispatched for a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 12:48 and determined the alarm was due to smoking. The alarm was then reset. GFD left at 12:53 a.m.

- At 10:50 a.m., GFD was dispatched again for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:54 but could not determine a cause for the alarm. The detector head was cleaned, and GFD left at 10:59 a.m.

• At 11:17 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a semi trailer rollover without injuries at Buzzi Unicem USA. Units arrived on the scene at 11:22 and contained a small diesel spill. GFD went back into service at 11:30 a.m.

• At 7:56 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 1 E. Olive St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 8 a.m. to find that a water flow sensor had malfunctioned. Maintenance advised that the detector would be repaired. GFD left at 8:19 a.m.

• At 3:03 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 410 S. Indiana St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 3:07 but could not determine a cause for the alarm. The detector head was cleaned, and GFD left at 3:15 p.m.

Additionally, GFD performed four medical assists and had one disregard during this time.
