Luke Britt

As part of the continuing Community Conversation program, Indiana Public Access Counselor Luke Britt will be giving a presentation on the Open Door Law and Access to Public Records Act on Monday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Putnam County Public Library, with time for questions proceeding the presentation.

This conversation is an opportunity for elected and appointed officials to learn more about their responsibilities under the law, as well as a chance for community members to learn their rights. This Community Conversation is open to all community members and is sponsored by the Greencastle League of Women Voters, the Putnam County Library and the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce.

John Adams, the second president of the United States, once said, “Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right and a desire to know.”

A healthy government is an open government. It lets everyone with a desire to find the information about the government that they are seeking. Open Door Laws help ensure that this is a reality.

The Office of the Public Access Counselor (PAC) provides advice and assistance concerning Indiana’s public access laws to members of the public and government officials and their employees.

Britt was appointed by then-Governor Mike Pence to serve as Indiana’s public access counselor in August 2013. The PAC is a non-partisan office dedicated to preserving the access rights of the public and educating government officials on their responsibilities under Indiana’s access laws.

Britt was re-appointed by Governor Eric Holcomb in November 2017 to serve a second term. Now the longest-serving PAC in state history, he previously served as an attorney and operations manager for the Indiana State Department of Health and as an attorney for the Indiana Department of Child Services after beginning his career in private practice in Johnson County.

Britt received his undergraduate B.A. degree in journalism from Franklin College in 2002, an M.B.A. from the University of Indianapolis in 2015 and a J.D. from the University Of Detroit Mercy School Of Law in 2005 and is admitted to the Indiana bar.

He regularly guest lectures on journalism, civics and law at Indiana universities and colleges and was an undergraduate intern at the Banner Graphic in Greencastle.
