With the approach of Putnam County’s 200th birthday, it’s time to tune-up our county history. Throughout 2020 and 2021, the Putnam County Museum will host these tune-ups presented by county historian Larry Tippin.

Tippin will update, expand and correct our knowledge of Putnam County people, places and events.

On the fourth Thursday of every month through September, Tippin will present informative talks about our unique history, the people and the events that shaped who we are and why we’re here.

The first presentation, set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, will dispel certain myths and legends of our founding. Tippin will discuss the issues of what was here before the county was created, treaties, legislation, setting a seat of justice and early court cases.

He’ll also reveal the more-than-probable reason why our county seat is called Greencastle. Hint: It has nothing to do with Pennsylvania.

And, why is our county called Putnam? Hint: It has nothing to do with a man named Israel.

Prepare to be shocked and surprised.

The Putnam County Museum is located at 1105 N. Jackson St., Greencastle. The talks are free and open to the public. For more information, call the museum at 653-8419.
