Three injured in wreck south of Greencastle

A three-vehicle crash on U.S. 231 late Thursday morning sent three people to area hospitals.

A tree service was cutting trees in the area of 3447 U.S. 231 South, about a half mile south of Jones Road, and had traffic reduced to one lane, with signallers directing traffic.

Deputy Brian Helmer reported that at approximately 11 a.m., northbound traffic was stopped when Jessic R. Cook, 30, Attica, approached from the south in a 2004 Ford Escape.

Cook told Sgt. Ed Wilson of the Greencastle Police Department she took her eyes off the road momentarily and then slammed into a stopped 2017 Ford Escape driven by Carl G. Sherwood, 72, Fillmore.

The impact then pushed Sherwood’s vehicle into a stopped 2009 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Shawn Phillips, 27, Cloverdale.

Cook complained of pain over her entire body and was taken to nearby Putnam County Hospital.

Both Sherwood and his passenger, Nancy King of Sullivan, were injured and taken to a Terre Haute hospital. Sherwood was taken from the scene before police could speak to him regarding the crash.

Both Cook’s vehicle, which is registered to Denise Gaskins of Greencastle, and Sherwood’s were towed due to disabling damage.

Phillips, who was not injured, drove his truck from the scene.

Helmer estimated damages at $25,000-$50,000.

  • She took her eyes off the road momentarily... perhaps on her phone? To night notice stopped vehicles on the road, she was distracted longer than "momentarily".

Momof2... be careful (smirk). Some people will not like your presumptions.

But I agree... 30yr old woman slams into stopped traffic? My money is on inappropriate cell phone usage.
