Invitation extended to Countywide Adult Art Exhibit

"Bearing Witness" by Toni L. Ridgway was selected by the Greencastle Arts Council as the graphic for its poster for the upcoming exhibit. It was inspired by a moment in time at the Putnam County Museum last fall. The Arts Council invites all adult 2-D and 3-D visual artists who live, work or have studied in Putnam County to apply for participation in “Locality: A Visual Art Exhibition.” Due to the current shelter-in-place order, the deadline for submission of artworks has been extended to May 20.

Following Gov. Holcomb’s extension of the statewide shelter-in-place order, the deadline for submissions to Putnam County’s first adult open art exhibit has been extended to May 20

The event, which is being organized by the Greencastle Arts Council in collaboration with the Putnam County Museum, tentatively is scheduled to open to the public on June 27, although the actual opening date will be adjusted, if necessary, to accommodate the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.

The exhibition will take place at the PCM and remain on display through August. In lieu of GAC’s annual Bonne Soirée, which was to have been held in conjunction with the event opening, a closing reception for the artists will be announced later.

“GAC would like to encourage and support the arts by recognizing local 2-D and 3-D artists in our area,” the group’s president, Lynne Tweedie, said. “We hope this exhibit will not only honor our artists but also create a wonderful, celebrative opportunity to bring people together, once we are able to come together again. We would love to see as wide a representation of regional talent as possible and extend this invitation to all adult artists, who have lived, worked or studied in Putnam County.”

In addition to having their work exhibited at the museum, individuals whose pieces are selected will have opportunities to compete for multiple awards totaling a minimum of $600. If the artist chooses, their works also may be offered for sale. In addition, interviews with the award-winning artists will be published in the group’s newsletter and through other GAC and PCM communications.

To participate, artists must be 18 years of age or older, and artworks should not exceed seven feet in height or width. The application fee includes submission of up to three pieces in the exhibit, a one-year Greencastle Arts Council individual membership, and the artist reception at the PCM.

Interested artists should submit their applications by the May 20 deadline. They can do so by uploading digital images of their work on to the GAC website (www.greencastleartscouncil.org), along with their artist’s statement, contact information and payment, or by emailing their materials (gacsubmission@gmail.com) and mailing a paper check to GAC Exhibition (P.O. Box 631, Greencastle, IN 46135).

After the initial review process is completed, participants will be notified and asked to deliver the works selected to the Putnam County Museum during the week of June 15–20, 2020. For additional information, visit the GAC website, contact gacsubmission@gmail.com or call (765) 720-8058.
