GCSC set to name new superintendent Monday

Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Following a search so long that children were actually attending school in person when it began, Greencastle is poised to name a new school superintendent on Monday.

The Greencastle School Board will meet in special session at 6:30 p.m. to approve and introduce the person who will replace current Supt. Jeff Hubble on July 1.

Hubble announced his retirement in mid-January, with the board announcing at the time it had engaged with the Indiana School Board Association to conduct the search for his replacement.

Earlier this week, the board hosted a public hearing regarding the superintendent’s contract, at which just two statements from the public were made -- one in person and one via videoconference.

One statement was from Jacob Widner of Ivy Tech Community College, informing the board of Ivy Tech's ongoing commitment to partnering with the school.

The other came from Greencastle Middle School Kristien Hamilton, inquiring if there was anything to stop the proposed superintendent from having other commitments, such as teaching at a university, while also serving as superintendent.

The question was not answered, with Board President Mike White stating the hearing was simply to accept comments, not a question-and-answer session.

Now the board is set to name the new superintendent during the public meeting at GCSC Central Office, 1002 Mill Pond Lane, Greencastle.

For both the public hearing and the most recent regular school board meeting, accomodations were made for those not wishing to attend a public gathering amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone wanting to attend virtually should contact Toni Smith at GCSC Central Office at tsmith@greencastle.k12.in.us or 653-9771, ext. 106 by noon on Monday.

  • You stated in your article, "during the public hearing, two statements - one in person and one via video conference were made." What were the statements?

Are you waiting until next week (May 11) when the announcement is made?

The report was not complete without stating the statements.

Lookout - the two statements are there...you just need to look a little closer.

Statement #1 was from IVY TECH. It was a commitment of cooperation between IVY TECH and GCSC.

Statement #2 is a little more tricky. It actually came from Board President Mike White. It was a declaration of tyranny and non-accountability phrased as "[the] hearing was simply to accept comments, not a question-and-answer session."

This is what you get when you have an appointed school board rather than an elected one.

Political patronage and a taste of authoritarianism.

Be sure to thank your local governtment (city and county) for maintaining the status quo.

  • The Greencastle school board is following state law in the hiring of a new superintendent.

  • Well it seems K Hamilton might have some insight to the possible new superintendent. But since her statement was put in the form of a question, it was disallowed. Things that make you go .... hmmm?

  • Kbmom I (K Hamilton) don’t have “insight on the new superintendent”, but instead was simply asking that the board take into consideration how that section of the proposed contract is worded to ensure the best interest of GCSC. See section 4 of the proposed contract http://www.greencastle.k12.in.us/UserFiles/Servers/Server_231111/Image/4253713%2...

  • "At least seven (7) days before a contract for employment is entered into between the Board and the Superintendent, the Board shall hold a public meeting on the proposed contract to hear objections to and support for and discuss, the proposed contract."

This is a direct cut and paste of Policy 1220. I found it on the GCSC website. I appreciate the opportunity for the public to examine contracts before they are offered. Here is a history lesson about a superintendent from the past. I believe an "evergreen clause" was included in the contract and the public didn't agree. Here is a link to a Banner-Graphic article from that time. https://www.bannergraphic.com/story/1921812.html

  • Thank you Ms or Mrs. Hamilton for clarifying.
